BOOK 1: BEYOND THE ICE WALL - Chapter 25: The Line We Do Not Cross (by Clive J. Welan)

Chapter 25: The Line We Do Not Cross

The light from the surveillance ship swept across the entire dock—no more shadows to hide in, no more places to run—as Dargen stood on the ship, his gaze sharp.

“Get down.”

Silence.

Pierre looked at him.
“We’ve come this far!”

“Get down,” Dargen repeated, firmer.

Quianna looked at Eljireh. No words were needed. They understood. Slowly… they stepped down from the ship, the wooden dock creaking beneath their feet, the sound louder than usual. Behind them, the ship’s engine shut off.

That chance… was gone.

Several agents approached—but did not attack, did not arrest—just stood there, watching. And among them, the man stepped forward again, his expression calm.

“Eljireh Root.”

This time… no one tried to deny it. Eljireh stepped forward slightly.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.
“It’s not time for you to know.”

The same answer—but heavier now.

Pierre clenched his fists.
“We can’t keep doing this.”

Quianna said quietly,
“Pierre…”

But Pierre didn’t stop.
“They’re playing with us.”

He looked at the man.
“If you want to arrest us—do it.”

Silence.

But the man only gave a faint smile.
“We can do that anytime.”

The words fell cold.

“Then why not now?” Eljireh asked.

Silence. The sea wind moved through the dock.

Then the man stepped closer—close enough—and spoke softly.

“Because you’re not ready.”

Eljireh’s heart began to race.

“Ready for what?”

But the man had already stepped back, not answering. An agent approached him, speaking quietly. He nodded, then looked at Eljireh one more time.

“Your journey doesn’t end here.”

Silence.

“It’s only beginning.”

He turned away. All the agents withdrew. The surveillance ship slowly pulled back. The floodlights shut off. Darkness returned to the dock.

Silence.

No one moved. No one spoke.

Pierre finally said,
“…that’s it?”

Quianna was still staring at where they had been.

“They… let us go.”

Rhevan was gone. The ship didn’t sail. They weren’t captured.

None of it… made sense.

Eljireh stood still, the words echoing in his mind.

You’re not ready.

He looked at the sea—dark, calm, yet distant.

So close earlier. Just a few steps away.

Yet it felt like another world.

Pierre exhaled sharply.
“We were so close…”

Quianna said quietly,
“No.”

Pierre looked at her.

“We’re not.”

Silence.

Rhevan. The data. The ship. Everything had brought them to this point.

And yet—they stopped.

Forced to stop.

Eljireh closed his eyes for a moment.

EL…
if this is the path You allow…
I will keep walking.

He opened his eyes. His gaze had changed—calmer, deeper.

“We’re not done.”

Quianna looked at him.
“No.”

Pierre gave a faint smile.

Finally.

Eljireh looked south.

For the first time… not with curiosity.

But with purpose.

The sea wind moved around them, and in the distance—beyond the unseen boundary—something stood, silent, waiting.

The Southern.

And far beyond it…

The White Rim.

Elsewhere, in a dark room, a man stood alone—his face finally clear.

Lucien Varkis.

He watched the footage from the dock. Eljireh.

A faint smile formed.

“As expected…”

He touched the screen—right on Eljireh’s face.

“…the boy made it this far.”

An agent asked,
“Do we stop them in the next attempt?”

Lucien shook his head slowly.
“No.”

Silence.

“We’ll let them…”
“…find what lies there.”

He paused, then said softly,

“And when the time comes…”

His gaze shifted.

“…he will understand.”

The screen dimmed.

But one file remained open.

ROOT FAMILY
Status: ACTIVE

And beneath it… an old note, almost hidden, but still there:

FORMER COUNCIL MEMBER: CEVILE ROOT

The night wind moved through the silence.

And without them realizing it…

the real journey…

had only just begun.
