BOOK 1: BEYOND THE ICE WALL - Chapter 25: The Line We Do Not Cross (by Clive J. Welan)

Chapter 25: The Line We Do Not Cross The light from the surveillance ship swept across the entire dock—no more shadows to hide in, no more places to run—as Dargen stood on the ship, his gaze sharp. “Get down.” Silence. Pierre looked at him. “We’ve come this far!” “Get down,” Dargen repeated, firmer. Quianna looked at Eljireh. No words were needed. They understood. Slowly… they stepped down from the ship, the wooden dock creaking beneath their feet, the sound louder than usual. Behind them, the ship’s engine shut off. That chance… was gone. Several agents approached—but did not attack, did not arrest—just stood there, watching. And among them, the man stepped forward again, his expression calm. “Eljireh Root.” This time… no one tried to deny it. Eljireh stepped forward slightly. “Who are you?” The man looked at him. “It’s not time for you to know.” The same answer—but heavier now. Pierre clenched his fists. “We can’t keep doing this.” Quianna said quietly, “Pierre…” But Pierre didn’t st...

BOOK 1: BEYOND THE ICE WALL - Chapter 24: The Edge of Departure (by Clive J. Welan)

Chapter 24: The Edge of Departure Dawn had not yet come, but the night felt thinner, as if their time was running out. The old building was no longer safe—everyone knew it, even if no one said it aloud. Rhevan stood in the middle of the room. “We move now.” Pierre stood immediately. “Finally.” Quianna closed her laptop. “Are they still nearby?” Rhevan nodded. “Closer than before.” Silence. Eljireh stood slowly, his eyes calm, but his thoughts far from it. “If we wait…” “…we’ll be caught.” No one argued. They moved quickly, leaving the building as the cold air greeted them. The sky was still dark, but a faint line of light had begun to form along the horizon. Their time was almost gone. Their footsteps were fast, but careful. The outer dock wasn’t far—but it felt distant. Pierre led the way, his eyes sharp. “If anything moves wrong…” “…I’ll be the first to know.” Quianna stayed in the middle, gripping her bag tightly. Rhevan followed behind, watching. Eljireh walked among them—but his t...

BOOK 1: BEYOND THE ICE WALL - Chapter 23: Watched (by Clive J. Welan)

Chapter 23: Watched The night felt longer than usual, the sea wind never stopping as the wooden planks of the dock creaked softly, as if the place was never truly still. They didn’t return to the warehouse—it was too risky—so instead they hid in an old building not far from the outer dock, its windows shattered and walls cracked, but enough to conceal them. Inside, only a single dim light remained on. Pierre stood by the window, watching outside. “They’re still there,” he said quietly. Quianna sat on the floor, a small laptop in front of her, trying to reanalyze the data. “They’re not leaving,” she replied. Rhevan leaned against the wall, silent, but his eyes never stopped moving. Eljireh sat alone in the corner of the room, quiet, his mind somewhere else. ROOT FAMILY PRIORITY OBSERVATION 18 YEARS The number kept repeating. Eighteen years. Since he was a child, before he understood anything. Why? “Eljireh,” Quianna’s voice was soft. He looked up. “You okay?” Eljireh nodded—but not conv...
